There will be tasks
several at a time
worth every dime
none will be more worth
than the task
of winning your mind
again and again

and life keeps laughing at me [IV]
This is a story contributed by talented writers and still in its infancy as more writers continue to make it a Novella. Enjoy my little input. Find the other parts here:

Angel or demon? Which exactly I’m
I to them? And what are they to me? Njeru lay facing up. He turned his head
left and right, getting a clear picture of those that stood beside him. He
wanted to speak, blurt even, yet the words formed like knot in the throat and
tightened as he opened his mouth.
He felt sorry; he had been
feeling sorry for the longest time, what with the divorce, reuniting and the
uncertainty of rebuilding his career.
“I am sorry,”
“Just rest, we will have enough time
to talk,” said Sarah
She gave his arm a reassuring
squeeze, then wiped tears from his cheek with her palm.
“It will be alright, I am happy
you are alive”
This was comforting and his lips
tiredly curved into a smile. He felt hoarse and parched; he couldn’t clearly
recall his last meal. He tried to remember, playing his memories like a vhs
tape in the head. Then it hit him, like a lightning bolt on a rainy day. He shot
up in bed and motioned for Mutiso to come closer. The plain ran through him and
he clenched at his teeth keeping it at bay.
“What day is it?” He asked
“It is Wednesday Baba Junior,”
replied a visibly surprised “Kwa nini?”
He shifted his gaze to Mutiso and asked
“Dexter! Have you seen my Dexter?”
“I picked him from the seat, I figured
it must have been why you came to see me.”
“Angel! Confirmed, you are an
angel.’
“What?” Asked Mutiso
“Never mind, I have a few
instructions for you regarding Dexter”
He spoke for about a minute
uninterrupted giving a brief synopsis of the problem at hand. He also explained
to Mutiso that he had until the close of business hours to have the required
photos for the competition. It was now fifteen past midday; giving Mots about
four hours to perform a miracle. It was not going to be an easy task, and it
had been made harder by the fact that Dexter also took a beating in the crash.
Mutiso had been tactful enough to avoid making mention of this as he wanted to
maintain the feel-good mood of his friend. He shook his hand and wished him
luck then turned to leave.
Njeru pulled him back and said
“No, you go with that luck I have
all the luck I need with me here.” He pointed at his wife who had been silent and
smiled.
May the story continue........
juvenile delinquent
Life has been unfair to me
This can’t be all I was intended to be
Doesn’t this life hold much more?
Can’t I make it out of this hole?
I am 16 years old
I want new clothes
New shoes
I want a phone!
Why would my parents not provide?
I can find ways to make things work
This nonsense that surrounds me must stop
I am tired of my poverty
I am enraged by my struggles
I shall make it out
By any means
I picked an axe from my neighbor’s farm
I exchanged it for meat and ham
The butcher doesn’t know
Neither does my mum
I need a bigger take
I am 18 years for God’s sake!
I nicked car headlights outside the mosque
Four headlights for thirty smokes
That is a good deal no?
I am making my name
hello!
And twenty years that may not be so bad a show
I have just received a briefcase of gold
From a white man who was shaken and old
I stood straight took instructions and strutted out bold
I am a go-between
From me to the big man across the creek
This is the big break I seek
I am twenty two years
My future doesn’t have to look so bleak
I moved up the ladder
Got a gun and I rule wider
I have my own sixteen, eighteen, twenty and twenty two year
olds
But I will not live to tell my tale
For at twenty four
I hear the knocks on my mother’s door
I had come to upcountry to lay low
But someone must have mouthed.
For tomorrow I will be no more
I am a thief.
written with a 16yo thief, I encountered to day, in mind. May this
16 year old make better choices before life chooses the sequence for him.

p.s: I lacked an appropriate photo...
not all posts have titles
Detached from the branch
Rustling away in the wind
It floated for a while then
Settled on the water surface
The gentle wind carried it to the edge
There it lay
Brown and moistened
Waiting to decay

It is still too early to complain
That was the message from the crowd
They said they can wait
They are willing to sit it out
For the president is only young
And his term has been just BUT a year
It is acceptable
The people say it can be swallowed
That our wildlife has been poached faster in a year
Than it has been for the past decade
We accept that the terror attacks happened without our
knowledge
And that getting the report endorsed and implemented
Is a privilege
One held by the political elite
We THE PEOPLE ACCEPT
That flying of flags takes precedence
And who flies them where and why is a matter of national
concern
Despite the advice from the top man:
“Leaders in different arms of government ought to dedicate themselves
to the achievement of the constitution, not the supremacy of their branch of
the public service”
A concern that supersedes intelligence
Over increasing number of body bags in our presence
And the accompanying ‘investigative’ silence
We are okay with the increase in inflation
Provided uhunye is
at the center of the national portrait
“Na tuko digital”
This is nonsense
A stupidity that goes beyond the emotional
The physical
The spiritual
This
This is the state of the nation address
Full of promise and lack of premise
I hear you Mr. President orate:
“but let us be careful: in devolving power and resources to the
counties, we must remember that to infect our new county governments with the
worst vices of the old is to betray the great hope of the constitution and its
tenets of leadership and integrity. Such a betrayal must not happen under my
watch”
Yet we all saw those that tender typewriters
And software that is available free online
We have found a new way to eat
KUSEMA NA KUTENDER
Masking our deals with business like undertones
Everything is in shades of grey
“and for governance in particular, article 10 calls for integrity, transparency,
and accountability”
Including trips to Rwanda
To learn about city cleaning and decongestion
Yet Rwanda is on the record saying they learnt their trade
from Nairobi
We too accept this
We accept this and other daylight robberies
Mr. President you rob me
YOU ROB ME Mr. President
Off my civil right to speak against ills
To march and mobilize people of similar opinion
You stood up and spoke in a language flowery
Of how you defend and uphold the constitution
Do you realize our nation is slowly falling?
Accustomed to mediocrity
How goes that Commander in Chief?
Is still at its infancy stage?
Just like civility in this nation
Democracy
And governance
EVERYTHING is suddenly at infancy
We reply to each query
With a choreographed chorused answer
“This is a new constitution and
we are doing everything to make it work. It is not the time to point fingers” *
What is wrong with the laptop project?
“This is a new constitution and we are doing everything to
make it work. It is not the time to point fingers”
What is happening to our elephants and rhinos?
“This is a new constitution and we are doing everything to
make it work. It is not the time to point fingers”
What happened to the Standard Gauge Railway hearings?
“This is a new constitution and we are doing everything to
make it work. It is not the time to point fingers”
Where are we in terms of response after the recent terror
activity?
“This is a new constitution and we are doing everything to
make it work. It is not the time to point fingers”
What is the feasibility of the uwezo fund, what impacts
continue being felt?
“This is a new constitution and we are doing everything to
make it work. It is not the time to point fingers”
Do you know the meaning of Inflation?
“This is a new constitution and we are doing everything to
make it work. It is not the time to point fingers”
The insecurity is so high
We invoked the shoot-to-kill directive
What can you say of that Mr. President?
“This is a new constitution and we are doing everything to
make it work. It is not the time to point fingers”
This is indeed a new constitution
“no great task is easily
accomplished ours is no exception”
But I would love to see a new president too
Not a puppet and actor like all the rest before him
You had a spine once
Calling out your opponents during the campaign
Has the seat mellowed you?
Or did you just realize
That this job may not be for you?
Stand up Mr. President
And be real with me
Be real with your people
Before the say yes to everything
Including a dictatorship
Be real Mr. President
Be real with yourself
For this was not
The STATE of the nation
Rather
* Only quote not included in the president's address
In spite of it all
I learned that some paths cross, some
paths run parallel and others merge into roads. Dotted patches of where we
jumped on the grass and the place we lay, flattened blades and squished pollen.
We must have fertilized the grasses as we left to run across the plains. On the
bright sunny day, as I chased you through the caves. Heart beating at what-if-you-really-got-lost,
and beating even faster when found you I held you in my arms. Laughing loudly
for long until we ran out of breadth and we stood silently close to each other.
Listening to the echoes of our laughter and trying to synchronize our
breathing. In that moment of pure bliss
and ecstasy with the background of the roaring sea, the breeze and the cooing
of sea gulls. It was a shallow drop, from the grass to the sand to the sea, taken
quickly and with glee. We were young and loud and brave and the old couple held
on closer to each other as we passed them chasing each other into the salt expanse.
I caught them looking back and he brushed her hair off her face and smiled. I
was thinking of how I would want that when you slapped me with water on my back……
