an unconventional welcome

There were 43 flies in attendance
43 for I never really counted
They could have been twice as many
Thrice if you counted long enough
It was our first night
So they danced the welcome dance
Around the lights
Across the ears
The hum and buzz
There were crackles
Few feet to my left
A camp fire and a couple that giggled
Just as much as the flies swarmed
Further down was the swooshing
Waves breaking on the anoxic sandy beach
Lights glowing in the distance
Fishermen were casting their nets
Surreal
Serene
Until we are snapped back to reality by the flies
And you know you had better finish up your meal
For the flies are not leaving
They were home
The island was their home
This was to be my home for four days too
